Haleakalā crater camping versus drive-in camping

Understand the difference between Hosmer Grove, Kīpahulu, the Hōlua and Palikū campsites, and Haleakalā’s three wilderness cabins.

One park, different overnight experiences

Haleakalā National Park includes both drive-in campground experiences and wilderness overnight stays reached on foot. They are not interchangeable reservations. Choose your overnight experience first, then arrange the reservation and transport that match it. A camping truck can support the road portion of your visit, but it cannot become a vehicle campsite inside the crater wilderness.

Hosmer Grove: forest camping

Hosmer Grove sits in the park’s summit district in a cool forest setting. It is a tent campground, with designated parking nearby. Rooftop camping is not prohibited, but the parking is not flat. Consider that limitation before choosing it for a rooftop-tent night, and prepare for colder and wetter conditions than you may have experienced on the coast.

Kīpahulu: a coastal campground

Kīpahulu offers a coastal campground experience in East Maui. Rooftop-tent camping is suitable at the appropriate drive-in spaces. Reserve in advance and plan for the campground’s actual facilities: bring drinking water, and do not expect showers or vehicle hookups. Keep campground reservations separate from your truck booking.

Hōlua and Palikū: hike-in tent sites

The wilderness campsites at Hōlua and Palikū are reached by hiking. Camping vehicles cannot reach these sites. Plan the walk, overnight equipment, water arrangements and wilderness reservation together using current National Park Service information. Do not use a campsite pin as a hiking route or assume a road reaches the location.

Three wilderness cabins

Hōlua, Kapalaoa and Palikū each have a wilderness cabin. These rustic cabins are reached on foot and have their own reservation arrangements. A cabin reservation is different from a tent-camping reservation. Use the official cabin information to understand facilities and the preparation needed for your overnight stay.

Choose the trip that fits

For a truck-based itinerary, concentrate on accessible campgrounds and permitted roads. For a crater overnight, make a separate wilderness plan with the park’s official guidance. Our map shows both categories so you can understand the whole island, while clearly marking the crater locations as hike-in sites. Check park conditions before departure because access and operating notices can change.
