Where to camp on Maui with a rooftop-tent truck

Compare Maui’s coastal campgrounds, forest camping and volunteer camping programs before choosing nights for your rooftop-tent trip.

Plan the overnight stops first

A camping truck gives you a place to sleep, but your overnight stops still need their own plan. Campground reservations are separate from a truck reservation. Start with the campground map, choose the settings you want, and build a trip around the places you can reserve. The coast, Upcountry and Haleakalā’s hiking routes offer very different experiences.

Coastal options for camper trucks

Camp Olowalu and Keʻanae Uka offer rooftop-tent options. Kīpahulu is another coastal option for a rooftop-tent stay, with advance reservations. At Waiʻānapanapa, choose the vehicle/camper-tent camping option rather than treating a ground-tent reservation as permission for a vehicle stay. Match the reservation to the way you intend to sleep.

Thousand Peaks and Hosmer Grove

Papalaua Wayside Park, also known as Thousand Peaks, is county-run and suitable for camper trucks. It is not actively managed on site, so arrive prepared to be self-sufficient. Hosmer Grove is a tent campground in a cooler forest setting. Rooftop camping is not prohibited, but the parking is uneven: that matters when your sleeping space is mounted on your truck.

Volunteer camping takes advance preparation

Waiheʻe and Nuʻu offer a different kind of stay through Hawaiʻi Land Trust. Complete the qualifying volunteer day before arranging your camping reservation. The camping is at no cost once the volunteer work is completed, and rooftop tents are suitable. Give yourself time to arrange the volunteer event, eligibility and reservation; these are not last-minute drive-up options.

Keep crater camping separate

Hōlua and Palikū wilderness campsites are hike-in destinations. The Hōlua, Kapalaoa and Palikū cabins are also reached on foot. Your truck stays outside the wilderness area. These stops belong in a hiking plan with separate reservations, equipment and preparation—not a drive-in rooftop-tent itinerary.

Build a realistic island itinerary

Leave room between your travel plans. Check the campground operator’s current conditions and your truck’s permitted-use policy before committing to access roads. Polipoli currently has a closure notice, so use its official updates rather than assuming a campsite is available. The map includes operator links where appropriate; map pins show approximate campground areas.
